Glenties Notes on July 8th 2004

Congratulations to Danielle Mc Kelvey, Stranaglough, Glenties and Gavin Kelly, Strabane who were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday last.

Congratulations to Edwina Bonner, Ardconnell, Glenties and Martin Bennett, Ardara who were married in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Saturday last.

The death took place at his home on Wednesday 30th June 2004 of John Gallagher, Ard Patrick, Glenties. His remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Thursday evening, where Fr. Nigel Ó Gallachóir C.C. Glenties received them. Fr. Ó Gallachóir assisted by Fr. Adrian Gavigan, Chaplain Letterkenny Hospital celebrated Requiem Mass on Friday afternoon at 3.00p.m. Burial took place afterwards in the New Graveyard. John is survived by his wife May, sisters, Mary and Annie, sister-in-law Annie Devenney, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Five brothers predeceased him, Neil, Jimmy, Pat, Hughie and Con.

Writer and broadcaster, Olivia O Leary will perform the official opening of the 24th annual Patrick MacGill Summer School on Sunday 18th July. The theme this year is “Politics and Democracy in Ireland in the 21st century. Among the high profile speakers who will attend this year is former Taoiseach, Garrett Fitzgerald, Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, Martin McGuinness, Justice Minister, Michael McDowell, Labour Party Leader, Pat Rabbitte, Finance Minister, Charlie McCreevy and Minister for Education, Noel Demsey. The school runs through until Friday. The list of speakers and guests is subject to change.

Mass will be celebrated in Glenties Graveyard on Sunday 18th July at 3.00p.m. and in Edeninfagh Graveyard on Sunday 8th August at 3.00p.m.

Glenties Medical Hall (Chemists) is now open Monday to Friday from 9.30a.m until 6.00p.m. and on Saturday from 10.00a.m. until 6.00p.m. There is no lunch hour closing. It is now under the new management of Garrett O’ Donnell who has taken over from Paddy Lalor who has served the community for a good number of years. We wish Paddy a very happy retirement and Garrett the best of luck with his new enterprise.

There is a Special Pilgrimage to Knock celebrating 150 years of Devotion to the Sacred Heart on Saturday 24th July. A coach will be leaving Dungloe at 7.30a.m. and Glenties at 8.15a.m. Contact John Mc Kelvey at 087-6410676 or 074-9546257.
