Narin & Portnoo Club Golf Notes 23rd August 2011

Bart Whelan presented his President’s Prize at the weekend and the field of 135 was the largest this year, other than the Captain’s Prize. Shane O’Neill from County Down has long been playing golf on Narin links and this was his biggest victory to date. The amiable 12-handicapper enjoyed a steady front nine, picking up pars at five holes to fully deserve his 20 points. Many a promising card is wrecked on holes ten to twelve, but Shane only dropped one shot over the trio and recorded another three pars afterwards to finish on 40 points. Dr. Cooke finished just a shot behind after a fine showing, while Glenties was further represented on the podium by John Molloy and Harold Reid. The president waxed eloquent on all manner of topics at the presentation, with verbal missiles frequently finding their mark among a hugely entertained assembly! We wish Bart well for the rest of his year as president.

We wish our Ulster Cup team every success in their semi-final second leg this Sunday at Kilkeel. The lads won the home leg by five matches to two on Saturday, a result which left the club twelve holes up overall. It won’t be easy in Kilkeel but the team has the fortitude to prevail. Playing at the weekend were Columba Gavigan, Patrick Boyle, John Bán Gallagher, Sean Cafferty, Hughie Moore, P.J. Gallagher and Joseph McLoone.

The club members were very saddened to learn of the recent deaths of Bríd Gallagher and Maggie Glynn, two much-loved ladies who contributed so much to their families and communities. We sympathise with Vinny, Michael and their families. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a-n-anamacha.

Paddy O’Doherty’s performance in last Wednesday’s Open was jaw-dropping with no fewer than 12 three-pointers on his card! After 22 points on the outward nine, the 18-handicapper stepped on the gas, finishing with seven straight pars for a huge win.
