Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 9th November 2010

The Rider Cup went the way of Ardara once again thanks to a stirring comeback on day two after the Owentocker men found themselves three points down after the fourballs. The final score of nine points apiece meant that Ardara retained the cup for another year, much to the delight of society captain, Donie McCole.

The first of the pre-Christmas outings in the “About or Over 50 Society” took place last Friday in Narin Portnoo with a good turnout despite the inclement weather. Micheal McGinley with an excellent 31 points had two to spare over his playing partner Barney Cunningham who took second place on a break of tie. Depending on weather, it is hoped to play on Fridays up to Christmas. The tee is booked for this Friday, November 12th from 10 to 11a.m.

While the previous two Wednesday Opens were won with the same score, Paddy B. Boyle went five better in winning the most recent event. Mícheál McGinley and Donie McCole shot 34 points; both players were solid on the front nine and held on coming home into the breeze. Their scores were considered excellent efforts but Paddy’s performance last Wednesday was simply outstanding. Eight three-pointers were recorded on the first thirteen holes and over the sixteen holes played, only Vinny’s Corner (12th) failed to yield at least two points to the Narin man.

Patrick A. Gallagher won the Sunday competition on October 24th by two points from P.J. Gallagher in second. His back nine of 25 points was astounding considering that it included a blank. The birdies on 13 and 16 more than compensated!

The Rumble on the Bank Holiday saw John Quinn, Willie Quinn and Seamus Ryan race to victory with 77 points. A steady collection of pars made all the difference in the end. The Killybegs trio of Alan O’Keeffe, Sean Rodgers and Denis Carbery were worthy runners-up.

Pauric O’Donnell was the victor in the last but one Sunday competition on a day when scoring was very keen in the mild conditions. A run of pars from the 7th to the 13th were the key to success, and the birdie three on the penultimate Dorleens was the icing on the cake.

Last Sunday’s event saw Stephen McHugh skip over the front nine in twenty-one points courtesy of a four-pointer on Runway (4th) and a plethora of three and two pointers. A solid back nine ensured the score was kept intact and by round’s end, Stephen had three shots to spare over the best of the rest.

The Gents defeated the Ladies five-two in the annual friendly challenge last Saturday. Performance of the day though went to May McCann and Annette McGettigan who trumped John Molloy and Martin Roarty five and four. The ladies recorded six nett birdies and a nett eagle during their short round. Michael Naughton and John Quinn also found Bernie Tonry and Rena Boyle too difficult to better, but that was as good as it got for the ladies and the lads reeled off five victories in the other matches to win comfortably.
