Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 8th February 2011

Brian McGonagle, new Club Captain for 2011, drives off at Narin and Portnoo Golf Club.

Club president, Bart Whelan, Lady president, Anne Hayden, Lady captain, Bernie Tonry and Captain, Brian McGonagle at the Captain’s drive-in at Narin and Portnoo Golf Club on Saturday last.

A large crowd gathered for the Captains’ Drive-in last Saturday to help officially launch the captaincies of Brian McGonagle and Bernie Tonry. The weather was very kind considering the gales of the previous week. Both golfers struck mighty drives, with no hint of nerves or trepidation. The ensuing scramble was won by Seamus McDonagh, Michael Naughton, Sean Connaughton and Joseph McLoone with 50.3 over 16 holes. The proceeds of the day were accepted by Mrs. Stephanie McNelis on behalf of the Donegal Hospice.

Sunday’s competition saw the aforementioned Joseph McLoone double up over the weekend, winning the stableford by a large margin. His score of 41 points was the only one to better par on the day, a magnificent achievement! Charlie Tully was second, six shots back, while John Bán Gallagher took third with 34 on a break-off-tie.

The Spring Foursomes 2010 was won by the pairing of Anthony Harkin and Patsy Harkin following their comfortable victory over Donie McCole and Charlie Bryson last Sunday. Both pairings had won thrilling tussles en route to the final and the quality of golf played last Sunday was a tribute to them all. The Rosbeg natives had too much in the locker on the day, however, and Charlie and Donie could have no complaints.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 1st February 2011

The Captains’ Drive-in has been been re-scheduled for this Saturday, February 5th at 10a.m. It will be followed by a fourball mixed scramble under a shotgun start. Let’s hope the weather is kinder than hitherto fore.

The club’s latest Gaeltacht match had to be postponed due to the hard frost last Saturday. Sunday’s golf went ahead as scheduled, with Malachy Murrin of Killybegs triumphing with 40 points on a break-off-tie from Sean Connaughton. Malachy’s little two at the High Altar was a key moment with just a couple of holes to play.

The previous Sunday’s competition was won by Daniel McGeehan who found the 15 hole format used on the frosty day much to his liking. Temporary greens did not faze him one little bit and he even managed a birdie at Vinny’s Corner. Kevin McCready won the Wednesday Open on January 19th with 38 points over 16 holes. The birdie three at O’Boyle’s Fort was a superb way to finish a great round and ensured a one-shot victory over Steven McHugh in second. I erroneously credited ace golfer, Donie McCole with success in the same event, but I am sure that I will be writing about one of the ‘winningest’ golfers in the club very soon! Tom Rawdon won the latest of these popular mid-week opens, just preventing Kevin McCready from winning two in a row. A rare birdie at the fifth for Tom contributed handsomely to his total.

Results:
January 30: Club Open 1. Malachy Murrin 40 b.o.t.; 2. Sean Connaughton 40; 3. Manus Boyle Jnr. 39; Twos: 6 balls January 26: Wednesday Open 1. Tom Rawdon (18) 36; 2. Kevin McCready (20) 35; 3. Eamon McGill (9) 35; Twos: 5 balls January 23: Club Open 1. Daniel McGeehan (16) 35 b.o.t.; 2. P.J. Murray (20) 35 b.o.t.; 3. Paddy B. Boyle (19) 35; January 19: Wednesday Open 1. Kevin McCready (20) 38; 2. Steven McHugh (19) 37; 3. Barry Keeney (12) 35; No twos.

Fixtures:
Saturday February 5: The Captains’ Drive-in at 10a.m. It will be followed by a fourball mixed scramble under a shotgun start.

Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 25th January 2010

The Captains’ Drive-in was postponed due to the heavy frost and has now been re-scheduled for Saturday, February 5th at 10a.m. It will be followed by a fourball mixed scramble under a shotgun start.

I neglected to include the club’s latest Gaeltacht result in my match report last week. The years are taking their toll! Michael’s lads won eight and a half matches out of ten, s superb result. This tally added to the four and a half won before Christmas leaves them handily placed after two matches.

The results of last week’s events will appear in next week’s notes. Kevin McCreadie and Donie McCole were the winners of the respective competitions.

Fixtures:
Sunday January 30: Club Open, single stableford Wednesday, February 2: Wednesday Open, ladies and gents, single stableford, 20 euro entry for G.U.I. visitors, including green fee;
