The Late John Gallagher:
The death took place, at his home, on Wednesday 25th March 2015 of John Gallagher, (better known as John Pat Owen), Strasallagh, Glenties. Requiem Mass was celebrated by John’s nephew, Fr. Francis Mc Loone, assisted by Fr. Denis Quinn, nephew of John’s wife, Mary Josephine, and Fr. Gerard Cunningham in The Church of The Holy Family, Edeninfagh, Glenties on Friday and burial took place afterwards in The New Graveyard, Glenties. John is survived by his wife, Mary Josephine, one son, Pat, two daughters, Isobel and Annie, one sister, Kathleen, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, – other relatives and friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Three brothers, Dan, Cornelius and Frank and five sisters, Mary B., Maggie, Josephine, Bella and Annie T., predeceased him. John would have been 99 in June.

Easter Charity Cycle:
Tír Chonaill GAP Cycling Club will host the Annual Easter Charity Cycle and Run on Monday 6th April. Registration will take place at 10 a.m., in the Glenties Day Care Centre, with refreshments served afterwards. Proceeds in aid of the Glenties Foróige, The HubYouth Centre, and Glenties Community Playgroup. Distances are 30 k or 60 k cycle, 5 k run / walk, or Duathlon 5 k run & 30 k cycle. Annual Good Friday Alzheimer’s Walk:
The Annual Good Friday Alzheimer’s Walk will start from The Day Centre at 11 a.m. Refreshments afterwards in The Day Centre. Donation will be greatly appreciated. Everyone is welcome.

Glenties Community Action Group
Glenties Gets Ready for Halloween: Following on from the successful Harvest Fair Festival we are now busily preparing for the annual Halloween celebrations on the October Bank Holiday Weekend. The weekend will begin at 4 p.m. for kids, on Friday 24th with Ghost Walks along the spooky roads of Altar in Glenties, and at 7 p.m. for adults. On Saturday 25th the Kids Parade & Halloween Disco takes place in the Community Centre at 4 p.m.; followed at 9 p.m. by the return of the Fireworks Display, so enjoyed last year, with viewing from the Comp. Sports Field, buckets will be available for donations at this event. Then on Sunday 26th the now famous Glenties Halloween Parade and Ball takes centre stage, with the Main Street being overtaken by ghouls and goblins, and the Highlands Hotel being the venue for all the monsters to gather for the Ball. Proceedings begin at 10 p.m.; and a prize fund of € 2,000 is on offer for the best dressed participants and scariest parade floats, so get designing and making now, it’s just a week away and remember – Glenties is the best, and only place, to celebrate your Halloween. St. Patrick’s Day Parade:
Glenties Community Action Group invite all organisations, families and persons of Glenties and surrounding areas to take part in the Glenties St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which is taking place on Saturday 15th March. The parade and day in general are being held to promote and raise monies for newly renamed Glenties Community Response Fund (formerly rainy day fund), and we hope to have a big turnout on the day. We already have commitments of floats and bands to take part, but we are not resting on our laurels and want as big a parade as possible to march up and down the street of Glenties. We encourage as many as possible to take part in this important event.

Fundraising Dance:
We are also holding a dance on Saturday night 15th March in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties for this newly named Glenties Community Response Fund. This is a fund to help anyone in the area, who finds themselves in dire straits as a result of a death or accident or any other crisis. Admission will be € 10 on the night and music will be by The Playboys. All monies raised on the night will be directed to the Fund. We ask you all for your support for this very worthy cause.”

Glenties Tidy Towns are compiling a local information brochure for 2014. All organisations, groups, businesses, and anyone with any local knowledge, is asked to forward their information to Glenties Tidy Towns by email – glentiestidytown@gmail.com; or by dropping it into the Community Centre office on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. All information needs to be submitted by 28th February.

An Garda Síochána will host an Information Evening for Community Alert and Neighborhood Watch Groups in The Nesbit Arms Hotel, Ardara, on Wednesday 12th February at 8 p.m

Cardiac Screening Unit:
The Naomh Conaill GAA club is organizing for the mobile cardiac screening unit to visit the club again (depending on numbers). The unit was last here in 2011 and it is recommended that screening be carried out every 2/3 years. The screening is open to both males and females between the ages of 14 and 35 years at a cost of € 45; and is open to club members and non members alike. Landscape Character Assessment – Donegal County Council:
Councillor Terence Slowey would like to inform all landowners and any interested parties that the Central Planning Unit of Donegal County Council is carrying out its first Landscape Charter Assessment. This involves identifying and mapping unique areas within the County, almost like a jigsaw. To do this the Council will be looking at the landscape, seascape, historic landscape and townscapes. Everyone knows the landscape in their own area and at this initial stage the Assessment is to know what the general public consider their landscape to be.

Definition of Landscape
The European Landscape Convention defines landscape as ‘an area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors’. A landscape consists of all the visible features of an area of land, both natural and artificial such as trees, mountains, rivers, buildings and roads. Landscape is more than just a beautiful view or an area of outstanding natural beauty, it is all landscapes including spoiled areas and ordinary landscapes, a rural area or an urban area.

Naomh Conaill Club Notes 22nd May 2013

There was no winner of last weeks lotto. The numbers drawn were 2,13,14 and 16. Two prizes of €50 went to Michael Brennan Main Street and Dermot Bonner Glen Road. Next weeks jackpot is €2,200.

In the championship last Wednesday the U14’s had a comprehensive victory over Bundoran 5-06 to 9-09. They continued their winning ways on Monday when they overcame Dungloe 1-05 to 7-07.

The thirds game v St Eunans which was due to be played last Staurday was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. This Friday they are home to Glenfin at 7.30pm.

Both the seniors and reserves had good victories at the weekend over St Michaels. The reserves won 3-13 to 1-06 while the senior game finished 0-09 to 0-07. This Saturday the reserves are home to Gweedore at 7.30pm.

In conjuction with our fund raising draw the club will host a Fun Filled Table Quiz(open to 14years and over) this Friday 24th May at 8.30pm sharp in the Community Centre. Tables of 4(adults €5 each) or tables of 5(14-18year olds €4 each) or mixed. To register your team or for any enquiries contact Michael 086 8174855 or Martin 086 8656312. The fundraising draw will then take place in Leo’s Bar after the quiz. Come along and enjoy a fun night.

Congratulations to Ethan O’Donnell who has been named on the Ulster U16 elite team.

Good luck to the Donegal minor and senior team, especially the Naomh Conaill lads Ciaran Thompson(minor), Jim, Anthony, Dermot, Leo, Marty, Joe and Charlie when they take on Tyrone on Sunday in the first round of the Ulster Championship.

Trocaire Appeal for the People of East Africa
The collection which was taken up recently amounted to a Total of € 4,015. The amount collected in Glenties was € 3,603 and the amount collected in Edeninfagh was € 412. Thank you sincerely for your overwhelming generosity.

Table Quiz
A Table Quiz in aid of N.C.B.I. (National Council for the Blind of Ireland) will be held in the Glen Tavern tomorrow night Friday 12th August at 9 p.m. € 20 per Table of Four. Everyone is welcome, so come along, enjoy the night, and support a good cause.

Mad Hatters Tea Party
Fintown Harps A.F.C. will hold a Mad Hatters Tea Party for the Under – Age Soccer Teams in the Highlands Hotel on Friday 12th August at 8.30 p.m. All parents are asked to support this event. Music is by David Craig and the Cufflinks. Little Sister of the Poor
The Little Sisters of the Poor have been given permission by Bishop Philip Boyce to collect in the Diocese of Raphoe. They will be in the Glenties area from 15th August until 20th August. Their aim is to raise funds for the upkeep of their Homes for the Elderly.

Collection
Co. Donegal Parents and Friends of People with Intellectual Disabilities Ltd. will take up their Annual Church Gate Collection before all the Masses next weekend.
