Glenties Notes 22nd March 2013

Bingo:
The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 12th March were – Grace O’Hara and Mary Gallagher won € 150 each; Isobel Mc Loone, Marian Mc Guinness, Margaret Gillespie, Maura Kilbane, Marian Ward, Bridie Boyle, Daithi Mc Gill. Sean Carr and Eileen Sweeney won € 100 each; Jimmy Quinn, Mickey Herron, Maura Kilbane, Nancy Dorrian, Maureen Gildea, Patsy Martin, Bernadette Mc Devitt, Hugo Mc Dyre and Sarah Gallagher won € 50 each; Kathy Connell won € 40 and Hugo Mc Dyre and Fiona Boyle won € 25 each.

Glenties Community Centre:
Bingo in the Glenties Community Centre every Tuesday night. Every Line € 50, every House €100. Jackpot if not won on 19 / 03 / 2013 will be € 5600 on 45 numbers. If not won on the night € 300 will be paid out. In-house draws. Snooker every evening from 4-10 p.m. except Tuesday evening, when it will close at 8 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday snooker room will be open from 12 noon to 10 p.m. Any one wishing to rent a room in the hall please ring 0872679321.

Glenties Sewerage Scheme:
Cllr. Terence Slowey proposed the adoption of a report on the Glenties Sewerage Scheme at the February 20th meeting of Donegal County Council. The report was unanimously adopted. The report related to the Consultation Process laid down in the Planning & Development Regulations 2001 – 2012 with regard to the Part 8 permission for the Glenties Sewerage Scheme as follows: Amendments to means of access to approved access road to the approved pumping station and the removal of the existing treatment facility at the Clos Naomh Chonaill Housing Estate and its replacement with a new pumping station to be connected to the new public sewer.

Tír Chonaill Gap Cycling Club:
Tír Chonaill Gap Cycling Club are holding a charity cycle (30 k & 60 k) and 5 K Run for Aware and Breast Cancer Research on Easter Monday at 10 a.m. from Glenties Comprehensive School. Registration is at 9 a.m. at the school. Adults € 10; U-18 € 5. All are welcome.

Glenties Day Centre Cake Sale:
The Day Centre is holding a Cake Sale in the Market Hall on Good Friday, after the Service in St.Connell’s Church. All Homemade Cakes, Breads, etc. All profits go towards the running costs of the Day Centre. Please support this worthy cause.

The Parish Based Preparation Programme for First Holy Communion called ~ “Do This In Memory” will continue Next Sunday ~ 24th March at 11 a.m. Mass.

Roads Programme for Glenties 2013

Cllr. Terence Slowey has been informed by the Roads Section of Donegal County Council that in 2013 upwards of 1 km of the Glenties/Ballybofey road will be upgraded from Fintown towards the Dry Arch at a cost of €81000.

Cllr. Slowey said he was very pleased that he had secured €80000 for the upgrading of the car park at the Narin Blue Flag beach. He went on to say that he had requested that a concrete plinth would be put in position for the bottle banks and possibly for the fixing of a bicycle rack to facilitate cyclists.

The Councillor said that €22,500 would be spent on the Glen road at a section known locally as the “Lab”, which is prone to flooding, and in addition that 1 km of the Meenavale road would be upgraded at a cost of €42,000.

Cllr. Slowey said that the road to Kilkenny school would be surface-dressed at a cost of €12,600, while 1 km of the Cleengort to Derryloaghan road would be surface-dressed at a cost of €12,600. He also said that 700 m of the Lacklea road in the Glen of Glenties would be re-surfaced at a cost of approximately €12,000.

Finally, according to Cllr. Slowey a small section of the Tullyard road, close to the bottom, which is in poor condition would get re-surfaced in 2013 at a cost of around €9,000.

Glenties Notes 17th February 2012

The Late Mary Anne Mc Callig
The death took place in The Hillcrest Nursing Home, Letterkenny on Wednesday 1st February 2012 of Mary Anne Mc Callig, Edeninfagh, Glenties. Her Remains were brought to her home on Thursday and to The Church of The Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Saturday morning. Fr. Pat Prendergast, Fr. Denis Quinn and Fr. Aodhan Cannon concelebrated RequiemMass. Members of the family did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought up the Gifts. Singing was by Breidin Gallagher accompanied by her son Darragh on Guitar. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. Mary Anne was predeceased by her husband John some years ago. Her brother John also predeceased her. She is survived by three sons, John, James and Pat, two daughters, Eibhlín and Mary, one brother, Paddy Ward, Edeninfagh, grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Thanks
Sincere thanks to Michael Boyle, Limelight, Glenties, for organising a very successful Fundraising ‘Country Night’ for the Little Angels School. He raised € 7,200, which was presented to Margaret Kennedy, Deputy Principal in the school. Thanks to all the acts who performed free on the night, the bus and taxi drivers who provided free transport, the walkers, those who gave donations and sponsorship and everyone who supported in any way.

Maire Doyle, Anne Byrne, Ardara, Rosaleen Melly, Anthony, Doochary, Fiona Boyle, Peter Sweeney, Anne Quinn, Martin Mc Taggart and Ann Mc Hugh, Glengesh won € 100 each. James Gallagher, Patricia Whyte, Fidelma Burke, May Kennedy, Carmel Doherty, Nellie Maguire, Frosses, Ann Quinn and Rose Mc Groarty won € 50 each. Rosaleen Melly won € 40. Margo Gallagher, Hugo Gallagher, Bridget Bonner won € 35 each. Margaret Gallagher, F. Doherty, Bernadette Gallagher, Frosses, Christine Mc Cool and M.M. Mc Gettigan won € 25 each.

Charity Ceilí
A Charity Ceilí will be held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Sunday 18th March. Dancing is from 9 p.m. – 12. Music is by The Long Note and admission is €10 (including supper). All proceeds will go to – Palliative Care Team, Donegal Hospice

The payment of the € 10 can be made to Martin Breslin, The Craft Gallery on Main Street, Glenties.

Naomh Conaill C.I.G. Presentation Night
A Hot Buffet and Dance will take place in the Highlands Hotel Glenties on Saturday 18th February at 8 p.m. Music is by ‘Derailed’. Garda Retirements
Garda Gerry Corcoran will retire from the Garda Síochána after 38 years of dedicated service in the Donegal Division. To mark this achievement, join Gerry for celebratory drinks in Leo’s Bar, Glenties on February 17th February at 9 p.m.

Garda / Community Function
To mark the retirement and acknowledge the service of Sergeant Sean Mc Kenna, Ardara, Garda Martin Tonry, Clogher and Garda John Kilbane, Ardara a function will be held in the Nesbitt Arms Hotel, Ardara on Saturday 25th February. Doors open at 9 p.m.; donations at door. Everyone is welcome.

Mullantyboyle Bridge
Cllr Terence Slowey has been informed that under the Regional and Local Roads Allocations 2012 € 350,000 has been approved for the replacement of the MullantyboyleBridge. Cllr Slowey would like to thank Mr. Charles Hanlon who coordinated the petition with over 200 signatures and together with myself arranged the necessary meetings with the County Council. Cllr Slowey would also like to thank all who signed the petition and the people of Glenties in supporting him to get this project underway. We now look forward to the completion of this job and the walkers and all those who use this bridge availing of it again.

Cash for Clobber
Scoil Mhuire is having another ‘Cash for Clobber’ collection on Tuesday 28th February. We welcome all bags of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, belts, handbags, bed linen (no duvets) curtains, paired shoes etc… We would like to thank you for your support for our past collections and look forward to this one being another success.

Dancing At Lughnasa
Glenties Drama Group is in full swing with rehearsals for their upcoming production of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa in Glenties Community Centre on March 2nd, 3rd, 4th. There is great local interest in the play as it reflects Friel’s memories of his childhood visits to his aunts in Glenties. So make it a date for your diary and come and enjoy an evening of live theatre.
