Glenties Notes 21st June 2012

New Arrival:
Congratulations to Catriona and Michael Bonner, Naomh Conaill Close, Glenties on the birth recently of their third child, a baby brother (Jenson) for Dion and Amy.

Busking Festival:
This weekend, from Friday 22nd June until Sunday 24th June 2012 the town of Glenties will host it’s first ever Busking Festival. Performers are expected from near and far. Registration takes place on Saturday morning in the Community Centre from 10 a.m. – 12 noon. It will be a festival for all the family as there is a Junior Section for performers aged up to 16 years. Entertainers of all types, as well as musicians can enter the competition, which takes place all day on Saturday on the Main Street. It will be judged under three categories – Talent, Entertainment Value and Crowd Participation. The prize money of € 3500 is very inviting Presentations to the winners of the competition will take place at the Bridge on Main Street at 2 p.m. followed by performances by the winning acts.

Variety Concert:
On Saturday evening June 23rd a variety concert will be held in the Community Centre, Glenties starting at 8.30 p.m. This event is hosted by the Glenties Community Action Group and features The Cookstown Sizzlers and local acts. Admission is € 5 with all proceeds going to Glenties Church of Ireland restoration fund.

Glenties Community Centre:
Bingo in the Glenties Community Centre every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. Every line is €50; every house is €100; the Snowball Jackpot will be €1900 on Tuesday 26th June on 45 numbers; if not won €300 will be paid out. Winners at the Bingo in The Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 12th June were – Bernie Bell, Glenfin won € 300; Mary Gaseley, Claire Keeney, Ann Mc Ginley, Margaret Murray, Christine Mc Cool, Helen Mc Dyer, Anne Kennedy, Dungloe, Teresa Mc Kelvey, Fintown, Kathleen Mc Glynn and Breege Roarty won € 100 each; Philomena Mc Callaig, Mary Mc Gill, Mary Gaseley, Paula Hegarty, John O’ Donnell, Sally Mc Guigan, Dinnie Long, Maureen Gildea, Rose Boyle, Dungloe and Mary Kennedy won € 50 each; Mary Gaseley and Anne Timoney won € 25 each; Claire Keeney, Sarah Gallagher, Kathleen Kennedy and Mary Kennedy won € 15 each.

Sheep Dog Trials:
Sheep Dog Trials will be held down the Church Road Glenties beside the GAA field on the 25th and 26th of August 2012. New Health Centre, Glenties:

Care of the Aged Collection:
The Glenties Care of the Aged Committee will hold their annual Church Gate Collection on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June. The proceeds will go to the running cost of our Day Centre.

Glenties Playgroup Summer Camps:
The Camps are on from 2nd July to 20th July – Monday – Friday- 10.30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Open to all children in Glenties and surrounding area; including children visiting the area; Children 3 years – 8 years in the School Building and Children 6 – 12 years in the School Gym / Community Centre. 2nd July – 6th July – Children 6 – 12 years – football with Marty Boyle in School Gym, Children 3 – 8 – Arts and Crafts, Wild Bird Demonstration by Pedro, Cooking, Bouncy Castle in the Pre- School Building. Cake Sale:
There will be a Cake Sale in the Pre-School Building on Friday 22nd June at 12.30 p.m. in aid of Animals in Need, Donegal Town. Please support this worthy cause; thank you.

Glenties Notes 25th April 2012

First Holy Communion
Children from St. Riaghan’s, Drimnacrosh, Kilkenny N.S. and Scoil Mhuire will receive their First Holy Communion on Saturday next 28th April at 11 a.m. Mass in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.

The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 17th April were – Brown Kid won the Jackpot of €400; John Mc Loone, Ann Marie Gillen, Dooey, Jean Boyle, Anna Mc Dyre, Nellie Maguire, James Byrne, Maas, Sally Mc Hugh, Michael Doherty, Paddy Doherty and Michael Mc Brearty won € 100 each; Robert Freeborn won € 60; Teresa Mc Kelvey, Anne Furey, Cathy Connell, Mary Kennedy, Patricia O’ Connell, Anthony Burke, Mary Doherty, John Boyle, Ryan Hunter, Elizabeth Buckley and Margaret Murray won € 50 each.

From Tuesday 24th April the Glenties Community Centre are starting a ‘Snowball’ on the Jackpot at their weekly Bingo. The Snowball will start at €1000 on 45 numbers. If not won, € 300 will be paid on the house. The Snowball will increase by €100 every week until it is won. Every line is €50; every house except snowball is €100. Congratulations to 18-year-old singer / songwriter Riaghan O’Callaghan, who won top prize in the Opportunity Knocks Competition in Donegal Town recently. She also won the Borders Got Talent competition last year. Riaghan is a daughter of Tony and Angela O’Callaghan, Kilraine, Glenties.

Congratulations also to the ‘Man in Black’ gang from Glenties and Ardara who came second in the Opportunity Knocks Competition.

The Donegal Down Syndrome Church Gate Collection will take place next weekend.

Naomh Conaill Ladies would like to thank everyone who contributed to their recent Church Gate Collection. A total of € 905 was raised. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Glenties Community T.V.
The Committee would like to thank all those who paid € 10 at the Craft Shop, and to remind others that they can still pay by this method. If they do not wish to pay by this method, the committee will be out collecting within the next few weeks.

Annual Biddy Devine Memorial Walk

Mass in Rossnowlagh
A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ Café at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday 1st May and every first Tuesday for Mass in Rossnowlagh. The organisers wish to make an appeal for more people to join them.

Naomh Conaill Girls
Congratulations to our U – 14 Girls team who beat Termon and St. Eunan’s in Termon on Sunday last, to win the Feile County Final. They are now through to the All Ireland Final in Laois later on. This is the second year in succession that the Naomh Conaill Girls are representing Donegal in the All Ireland Final. Well done Girls!

Ladies County Minors
Best wishes to the Ladies County Minor team who are in the Ulster Final on the 19th May, with Glenties girl Alanah Mc Donnell on the Panel.

Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Mary B., (formerly Gildea, The Rock, Glenties), extended family, relatives and friends of Roy Sabine, Meenahalla, who died in Killybegs Hospital on Sunday last.

Glenties 1st Annual Busking Festival Weekend
A Busking Festival will take place in Glenties on Friday 22nd, Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June; € 3,500 in Prize money; Open to all buskers. Contact Anne on 087-6944228 for more information and registration.

Public Meeting
There will be a Public meeting on Friday 4th May in the Community Centre starting at 8 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is, to get the views of the Community on changing the date of the Harvest Fair Day from the 12th September to the 2nd Saturday in September, thus having the fair on a weekend every year, enabling people who are away from home to come home for the fair.

Tourist Office
Glenties Museum and Heritage Centre intend to open a local Tourist Office in the Museum when it re-opens for the season on 14th May 2012. All local tourist providers e.g. B & Bs, Hotels, Self Catering, Sports and Recreational providers are asked to leave supplies of their brochures either at the Museum, which is presently open on Wednesdays only or with Aidan Campbell.
