Glenties Notes 22nd May 2014

The Late Sean Mc Gettigan:
The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital, on Sunday 11th May 2014 of Sean Mc Gettigan, Mill Road and originally of Straboy, Glenties. His Remains were brought to his home on Monday and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Tuesday afternoon. Fr. Pat Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass at 2 00 p.m. Family members did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music was by Ernan O’ Donnell and Siobhan Brown (Mc Elhinney). Burial took place afterwards in the New Graveyard. Sean is survived by his wife, Mena, three daughters, Maureen, Margaret and Carol, two sons Gerry and Martin, sister, Nuala Quinn, brother, Seamus, grandchildren, in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Three sisters, Peggy Mc Hugh, Breid Boyce and Grainne Mc Dyer predeceased him.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day:
All at Owenea Trading, Mill Road, Glenties would like to say a Big Thank You to everyone who called to the shop on May 1st ‘Alzheimer’s Tea Day’ and to all those who gave donations. Thanks also to everyone who helped with the Tea and Una, Niamh and Ronan for all the home baking. Altogether € 626.06 was raised on the day. Thanks again to everyone. All proceeds from this event will be spent on local Alzheimer Services for families in County Donegal.

Confirmation:
Congratulations to the young boys and girls who received the Sacrament of Confirmation in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Sunday last 18th May.

First Holy Communion:
Children from St. Riaghan’s N.S. Drimnacrosh, Kilkenny N.S. and Scoil Mhuire will receive their First Holy Communion next Saturday 24th May at 11.00.a.m. Mass in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties.

Party for First Communion Children:
The Annual party for the First Holy Communion Children, their families and guests will be held in the Community Centre after the Mass

Fintown Festival:
Fintown Festival takes place from Friday 30th May until Monday 2nd June. It starts off with a Fireworks display on the banks of Lough Finn on Friday night. On Saturday there is a 20k, 40k and 60k Leisure Cycle with Tír Chonaill GAP CC. The Gaeltacht Lar 5k Fun Run in aid of Donegal Hospice, Digger Handling Skills, Quad and Tractor Reversing also takes place on Saturday. Sunday is Family Fun Day at the Train Station, with a Regatta on Lough Finn with Donegal Coastal Rowing Association, Hills and Glens Honda Run and a Vintage Tractor Run in aid of Donegal Mountain Rescue with Mid West Vintage Club, Vintage Car Display The Lord Mayor Crowning Dance is in the Noble Bar On Momday Fintown Harps under age Soccer Tournament is at Páirc Ácla at 11 00 a.m.

Cash for Clobber at St. Riaghan’s N.S. Drimnacrosh:
Cash for Clobber Collection will take place at the school on Tuesday 27th May, organised by the Green Team. The school will receive a cash donation for each well filled ‘Cash for Clobber’ or bin liner size bag. Money collected will go towards school funds. Filled bags can be brought to the school on Monday 26th or early on the morning of Tuesday 27th May. This collection is part of the Green School’s Initiative that is on – going within the school, and is an opportunity to get rid of unwanted clothes, shoes and textiles in an environmentally friendly way. The Church Gate Collection taken up recently for Cancer Care West amounted to € 777.81. Thank you to everyone for your generosity.

Coffee Morning:
The Family of Martin Mc Dyer, Meenahalla, wish to invite everyone to the Community Centre immediately after Martin’s Month’s Mind Mass on Saturday 5th April, for a Coffee Morning in aid of the Donegal Hospice. Any donation that you would like to make will be given to The Donegal Hospice.

Foroige Quiz Night:
A Quiz night in aid of Glenties Foroige Youth Club will be held in the Community Centre, Glenties this Friday 4th April at 8.00 p.m. Please support.

Glenties Drama Group:
On April 5th / 6th Glenties Drama Group bring the hilarious comedy – ‘The 2 Loves of Gabriel Foley’ by Jimmy Keary to the stage of the Community Centre in Glenties. .Gabriel Foley is a middle aged bachelor, who lives with his elderly mother. .She fears she will never get rid of him as he ‘can’t hold on to a woman’. Then he falls for Hazel, a man eater, an uppity member of the local Drama Group. Gabriel is out of his depth, can Chrissie, his reliable neighbour who fancies him, save him from a fate worse than death? Add a cast of crazy characters and be prepared for a night of fun and laughter; Just the ticket to cheer us up in these difficult times.

The Late John Mc Loone:
The death took place in Massereene Manor Private Nursing Home, Antrim on Sunday 23rd March 2014 of John Mc Loone, Cornagrilla, Glenties. His Remains were brought to his home on Monday and to The Church of The Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Wednesday morning. John’s brother, Fr. Francis Mc Loone assisted by a number of other priests concelebrated Requiem Mass. Family members did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by Vincent and Peter Campbell and the Laughlin sisters. A reflection was read by John’s daughter Máire at the end of Mass. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. John is survived by his wife, Kathleen, sons, Séan and Seamus, daughters, Eibhlín, Nabla and Máire, grandchildren, brothers, Patrick, James, Donal and Hugh and Fr. Francis, sister, Nabla, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His sister Eileen predeceased him.

Edeninfagh Graveyard:
Brannigan Associates, Chartered Surveyors, Glenties, have been commissioned to draw up Plans and apply for Planning Permission to extend the Graveyard in Edeninfagh and to construct a Roadway to the bottom of the proposed new extension.

Daffodil Day:
The amount raised on Daffodil Day in Glenties was € 2969.66. Thanks to all those, who gave so generously and to the volunteers who were on the street.

Cash for Clobber:
A ‘Cash for Clobber’ collection will take place in Edeninfagh N.S. on Tuesday 8th April. Bags are available at the school (black bin bags may also be used) which can be filled with all types of clothing, pairs of shoes, household textiles and handbags. Filled bags can be left to the school on Monday 7th or collection can be arranged by telephoning 086 1798692.

Shop Local:
Glenties Community Action Group aim to promote what is best about Glenties, and on Sunday 3rd November they will begin a “Shop Local” Campaign by inviting all local businesses to showcase their products and bargains in the Highlands Hotel between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. This is a great opportunity for the community to see what Glenties has to offer in shopping and entertainment, and there will be loads of offers available on the day. So please support your community and local businesses and shop local.

Church Gate Collections:
The Church Gate Collection for The Dyslexia Association taken up in Edeninfagh on 25th August amounted to € 95.00. A Big Thank You to all who gave generously.

The Church Gate Collection taken up in Glenties for People with Intellectual Disabilities raised € 651.45. Thank you for your support.

Cash for Clobber:
Scoil Mhuire is having another ‘Cash for Clobber’ collection on Tuesday 22nd October. We accept bags of men’s, women’s & children’s clothing, paired shoes, handbags, belts, bed linen (no duvets or pillows) curtains etc. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in the past and we look forward to another successful collection on the 22nd. Feel free to drop your bag(s) into the school anytime prior to the collection.

Glenties Notes 16th June 2012

All Ireland Champions:
Congratulations to the Glenties Scoil Mhuire Girls who had double success on the football field in the space of two days. They followed up their magnificent all Ireland win in Tallaght on Tuesday to clinch the Finn Harps Competition on Thursday. This means the girls have had a clean sweep in both Gaelic and soccer winning every competition they have entered. Well done to Amy Boyle Carr who was selected as ‘Player of the Tournament’ in Dublin. A fantastic achievement for all involved.

“Cash for Clobber”:
St. Riaghan’s “Cash for Clobber” collection is on Monday 18th June. Scoil Mhuire “Cash for Clobber” collection is on Wednesday 20th June.

Collection:
Thanks to all who contributed to the recent Irish Cancer Society Collection. The amount raised was € 782.00.

Bike Week:
Bike Week is commencing on 16th June. Along with the weekly run Tír Conaill Gap Cycling Club will run a Fun Cycle Day. The club invite everyone, of all ages and levels of cycling that would like to get out their bike for a fun social run, to come along on Sunday 17th June at 3 p.m. and join them at the Community Centre. Why not make it a family day out? There will be a Barbeque afterwards in Costcutters Car Park.

Graveyard Sunday:
Mass will be celebrated in the New Graveyard, Glenties on Sunday 8th July at 3 p.m. Mass will be celebrated in Edeninfagh Graveyard at 3 p.m. on Sunday 5th August.

Fundraising Dance:
A fundraising dance in aid of Naomh Conaill Ladies and Fintown Harps will take place in Halla Baile Na Finne, Fintown next Sunday 17th June. Music is by The Regulators. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and music will start at 9 p.m. Admission is € 10. Get your dancing shoes on and support two local clubs.

Community Centre:

The Late Mary Anne Mc Callig
The death took place in The Hillcrest Nursing Home, Letterkenny on Wednesday 1st February 2012 of Mary Anne Mc Callig, Edeninfagh, Glenties. Her Remains were brought to her home on Thursday and to The Church of The Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Saturday morning. Fr. Pat Prendergast, Fr. Denis Quinn and Fr. Aodhan Cannon concelebrated RequiemMass. Members of the family did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought up the Gifts. Singing was by Breidin Gallagher accompanied by her son Darragh on Guitar. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. Mary Anne was predeceased by her husband John some years ago. Her brother John also predeceased her. She is survived by three sons, John, James and Pat, two daughters, Eibhlín and Mary, one brother, Paddy Ward, Edeninfagh, grandchildren, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.

Thanks
Sincere thanks to Michael Boyle, Limelight, Glenties, for organising a very successful Fundraising ‘Country Night’ for the Little Angels School. He raised € 7,200, which was presented to Margaret Kennedy, Deputy Principal in the school. Thanks to all the acts who performed free on the night, the bus and taxi drivers who provided free transport, the walkers, those who gave donations and sponsorship and everyone who supported in any way.

A Charity Ceilí will be held in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Sunday 18th March. Dancing is from 9 p.m. – 12. Music is by The Long Note and admission is €10 (including supper). All proceeds will go to – Palliative Care Team, Donegal Hospice

Naomh Conaill C.I.G. Presentation Night
A Hot Buffet and Dance will take place in the Highlands Hotel Glenties on Saturday 18th February at 8 p.m. Music is by ‘Derailed’. Garda Retirements
Garda Gerry Corcoran will retire from the Garda Síochána after 38 years of dedicated service in the Donegal Division. To mark this achievement, join Gerry for celebratory drinks in Leo’s Bar, Glenties on February 17th February at 9 p.m.

Garda / Community Function
To mark the retirement and acknowledge the service of Sergeant Sean Mc Kenna, Ardara, Garda Martin Tonry, Clogher and Garda John Kilbane, Ardara a function will be held in the Nesbitt Arms Hotel, Ardara on Saturday 25th February. Doors open at 9 p.m.; donations at door. Everyone is welcome.

Mullantyboyle Bridge
Cllr Terence Slowey has been informed that under the Regional and Local Roads Allocations 2012 € 350,000 has been approved for the replacement of the MullantyboyleBridge. Cllr Slowey would like to thank Mr. Charles Hanlon who coordinated the petition with over 200 signatures and together with myself arranged the necessary meetings with the County Council. Cllr Slowey would also like to thank all who signed the petition and the people of Glenties in supporting him to get this project underway. We now look forward to the completion of this job and the walkers and all those who use this bridge availing of it again.

Dancing At Lughnasa
Glenties Drama Group is in full swing with rehearsals for their upcoming production of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa in Glenties Community Centre on March 2nd, 3rd, 4th. There is great local interest in the play as it reflects Friel’s memories of his childhood visits to his aunts in Glenties. So make it a date for your diary and come and enjoy an evening of live theatre.

Wedding Bells

Sympathy
Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife, Annie, other relatives and friends of Johnny Boyle, Loughcrillan Road, Narin Road, and formerly of Aughla, Glenties, who died on Wednesday 5th October 2011 in Letterkenny Hospital.
Sincere sympathy is extended to Mary Breslin, Kilraine, Glenties on the death last week of her sister, Annie Braddon, Garrowart, Ardara; also to all the relatives and friends.

Tír Chonaill GAP Cycling Club
After being rescheduled due to adverse weather conditions, Tír Chonaill GAP CC ran a very successful event with over 100 cyclists taking part in 3 different route options, a 30k, 60k and 120k route, which really tested a lot of the participants. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people who made the event the success it was, firstly thanks to the 100+ cyclists without whom the event wouldn’t happen, thanks to the drivers of the lead vans and sweeper vans, the motorcycle marshals, the Gardaí and the marshals back at base in Glenties, thanks to the St. Johns Ambulance personnel who attended, (thankfully we had no major casualty’s!!), to the photographers and water stop attendants who did great work on the 3 routes, also to the Highlands Hotel for providing their ballroom for the refreshments afterwards, to the Day Care Centre and Comprehensive school for the use of their buildings, great appreciation to the businesses and people that kindly sponsored food and drinks, last but by no means least, the ladies of the club who did Trojan work to dish out the soup, sandwiches and tea to the hungry cyclists! Scoil Mhuire is having a “Cash for Clobber” collection in the school next Wednesday19th October. They are collecting – unwanted clothing for adults and children; paired shoes, hats and scarves, handbags and belts, curtains and linens. For each bag the school collects they will receive € 4. Mass for Road Traffic Accident Victims
The 11 a.m. Mass in St. Connell’s Church Glenties on Sunday 20th November will be celebrated for the intentions of road traffic accident victims. The Mass is being organised by Margaret Mannering for World Remembrance Day, for Victims of Road Traffic Accidents. The names of those who have died on the roads, at home or abroad, will be read out at the beginning of the Mass on that day. Relatives and friends of the deceased are invited to attend. Members of the emergency services – i.e. Fire Brigade, Ambulance, An Garda Síochána, together with the Road Safety Officer attached to Donegal County Council are also invited. Rectors Challenge Charity Cycle
The 2011 cycle raised over €10,000 between the group parishes of Ardara, Glencolmcille, Glenties, Lettermacaward and Inniskeel. Various charities throughout the group benefited from this. We would like to thank all those who helped in any way to run this event. Those who provided transport, signs, refreshments, spare bicycles and music, the local Gardaí and County Council workers for their help. We also thank the Marshalls and First Aid personnel and last but by no means least the Cyclists, but for them the event would not happen. All your help and support is very much appreciated.

Bingo
The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 20th September were – Nancy Gill won the jackpot of € 400. Bernadette Mc Devitt, Nancy Gill, Nellie Maguire, Rosaleen Melly, Charlie Mc Carron, Rosaleen Melly, Anne White, Nancy Dorrian and Seamus Deane won € 100 each. Sarah Gallagher, Sadie Sweeney, Ann Quinn, Carmel Fitzgerald, Annie Deane, Kilcar, rosemary Whelan, Ann O’ Donnell, Cathy Connell, Carol Sinclair Teresa Molloy, Hazel Staunton and Fiona Boyle won € 50 each. Anne Quinn won € 40. Mary Furey and Hazel Staunton won € 25 each.

Collection
The Annual Labour Party collection will be taken up at Church Gates in Glenties, Edeninfagh and Kilclooney on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 1st and 2nd of October.

Tiny Tunes
Tiny Tunes provides fun music and movement classes for babies and pre-school children aged 3 months to 5 years with their parents / minders. Zumba Fitness Classes are taking place in the Community Centre every Tuesday at 11 a.m. and every Thursday at 7 p.m.

“Cash for Clobber”
Scoil Mhuire is having a “Cash for Clobber” collection in the school on Wednesday19th October. They are collecting – unwanted clothing for adults and children; paired shoes, hats and scarves, handbags and belts, curtains and linens. For each bag the school collects they will receive € 4. Bags can be left at the school from Monday 17th October. Thank you for your continued support.

A Walk in aid of Donegal Hospice will take place on Saturday 25th June. It will leave the Highlands Hotel at 10.45 a.m. taking in Doobin, Meenahalla, and Glen Road and back to the Highlands Hotel for light refreshments. Everyone is welcome. For more details contact Joe on 087 6766087.

The Playground Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed to their recent Church Gate Collection. The amount collected was € 714.

Universal Song
An evening of Uplifting Music and Song will take place in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Sunday 26th June at 7 p.m. The programme will present songs and music to uplift the soul, performed by, Parish of Glenties Youth Choir, Scoil Chonaill Bunbeg Choir, Scoil Mhuire, Glenties, St. Conal’s, Kilclooney Choir and St. Bridget’s Choir, Lettermacaward. The concert will also feature performances by various Soloists, and promises to be a fantastic evening. Admission is by donation and all money raised will go to Letterkenny General Hospital’s Ophthalmic Department to help fund an OCT Scanner. This is a type of scanner which helps diagnose early eye disease in people with diabetes, age related macular degeneration, and in glaucoma, and could prevent sight loss. It is a most worthy cause and we ask that you all come along and show your support. You are promised some top class entertainment.

Care of the Aged Collection
The Annual Care of the Aged Collection will be taken up next weekend, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June.

Mobile Heart Screening Service
Naomh Conaill are organising a Mobile Heart Screening Service on 9th July at the Club grounds. This Screening Service will be run by ‘Healthy Hearts Healthy Lives’- who provide cardiac screening to help prevent sudden deaths in young people who may have Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. Target Age Group: 14yrs – 35yrs (Places Limited). Cost is €45.00/ea (payable at time of booking).
