Narin & Portnoo Golf Club Notes 31st August 2010

The club can feel very proud of its youth team following its narrow defeat to Ballyliffin in the County Final last weekend. To lose by a single hole after 108 holes of golf is heart-breaking but the lads can attest that they performed admirably and took defeat in the true spirit of the game. Following their semi-final victory the previous weekend, Martin Roarty had his charges practising for the home and away tussle ahead. Ballyliffin came down to Narin on Saturday and the resultant 2-1 victory for the home side was well-merited. The return match on Sunday was keenly contested, with our club captain enjoying the lads’ skill and fortitude. Alas, it was not to be and Ballyliffin proved themselves worthy champions. This was Narin and Portnoo’s third final appearance in four years, a testament to the work being done by the junior convenors and our club professionals.

John Molloy ripped the course apart last Wednesday, chiselling out two nines of 22 points for a fantastic one under par gross round of 72. John was out in level par, a bogey on four cancelled by a birdie on nine. An ugly seven on ten could have upset the apple cart, but John replied immediately, birdying eleven, thirteen and fourteen. Another bogey on seventeen left him requiring a par for a 73, but being a good Glenties G.A.A. man, John finished strongly, sinking a putt for birdie on the last. His fourball gaped in awe.

Frankie Kennedy was the only player to match his handicap last Sunday as the combination of windy conditions and tricky pins contributed to big scores on many cards in the Maguire Meats stroke competition. The Killybegs golfer did not enjoy the best of front nines, finishing with two double bogeys, but apart from a double also on fourteen, the golf coming home was exemplary, with six pars on the card. Owen Boner responded to my recent pep talk, winning his category with panache on a break-off-tie. The C.S.S. was high, reflecting the difficulty of the conditions, so only reductions of handicap applied.

The Captain’s Outing to Ballyliffin is scheduled for October 9th and 10th. The cost is 110 euro per person sharing for two rounds of golf, bed and breakfast, an evening meal and prize-fund. Non-golfers are welcome to come for just 80 euro. Places are limited, so please contact the professionals as soon as possible.

Results:
August 29: Maguire Meats 1. Frankie Kennedy (13) 73; 2. Charlie Tully (12) 75 b.o.t.; 3. Joe Conneely (15) 75; Cat A Paul Cooney (9) 76 b.o.t.; Cat B Owen Boner (14) 76 b.o.t.; Cat C Pat Gallagher (18) 76; Nines: Connell Gavigan (21) 34.5; Kevin Patton (9) 35.5; CSS 76;
