Glenties Notes 25th January 2012

Enrolment Day in Scoil Mhuire
Enrolment Day for School Year 2012 – 2013 in Scoil Mhuire takes place on Friday 10th February between 1.30 p.m. and 3.00 p.m. You may bring your child to see his/her new classroom on this day and perhaps meet a few new friends. This year an Enrolment Pack can be collected from the School Secretary from Wednesday 25th January onwards. This is to give parents time to study the pack. Any questions you may have will be answered on Enrolment Day.

West Coast Cormorants Swimming Club
A new 8-week term of swimming lessons will start on Tuesday 7th February in Ballyshannon Pool. To book a place for your son or daughter, age 7 or over, please contact the Dolmen Centre, phone 074 9545879. All children from the Glenties, Ardara and Portnoo areas are welcome. Please enrol by Friday 27th January.

Pioneer Total Abstinence Association
The local branch of the P.T.A.A. wish to thank everyone who gave so generously to their recent Annual Collection.

Bingo
Bingo takes place every Tuesday night in The Community Centre Glenties at 9 p.m. Doors open at 8 p.m. Every Line € 50, every House € 100, Jackpot € 400. Snooker tables open every evening except Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. The Committee would like to thank everyone for their continued support. Winners at the Bingo on Tuesday 17th January were – Dim Melly won the Jackpot of € 400. Isobel Mc Loone, Bernie Martin, Anne Furey, Denise Maguire, Rosemary Whelan, Irene Langan and Rose Mc Fadden won € 100 each. Teresa Mc Kelvey, Jimmy Quinn, Nora Gallagher, Bid Fletcher, Anne White, Mary Breslin, Ann Mc Hugh, Mannix Boyle, Bridie Boyle, Yvonne Doherty, Carmel Doherty, Eileen Gallagher, P. Molloy, Fiona Gallagher and Margaret Ann Mc Brearty won € 50 each. Kathleen Boyle won € 40. Kitty Mc Glynn, Annie Boyle, Sally Mc Guigan and Anna Cannon won € 25 each. Fiona Gallagher, Margaret Melly and M. Furey won € 20 each.

Sympathy
Sincere sympathy is extended to Lil Cannon and family, Narin Road, Glenties, on the death of Lil’s brother Connie Mc Cahill, formerly of Lettermacaward, who died recently in Glasgow.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, relatives and friends of 16 year old Martina Maguire, Ardara, who was buried in Ardara on Monday last. Martina was a grandniece of Rose Mc Gill, Glen Road, Glenties and was a pupil at St. Columba’s Comprehensive School in Glenties.

GAP Tourism
GAP Tourism would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to the fun run on 26th December. € 250 was raised which went towards the insurance for the GAP sporting events and the walking trail at Kilraine. The GAP Tourism AGM will take place on Monday 6th February at 9 p.m. in the Dolmen Centre Kilclooney. You are welcome to contribute to this meeting and enhance this unique area as a destination for outdoor activities. See the website; www.gaptourism.com

Church Gate Collection
The Bluestack Special Needs Collection will take place at all Masses next weekend 28th & 29th January. All support greatly appreciated.

Herron / Boyle Wedding
The marriage of Francis Herron and Patricia Boyle took place in St. Conal’s Church, Kilclooney on Saturday 26th November 2011. Fr. Philip Daly, Kilclooney assisted by Fr. Pat Prendergast, Glenties officiated and celebrated Nuptial Mass. Francis is a son of Patrick and Bernadette Herron, Letterilly, Glenties and Patricia is a daughter of Jimmy and Philomena Boyle, Rosbeg. Her father gave the bride away and her sisters Caroline Carr, Marie Carr and Helen Boyle attended her. Michael Herron, brother of the groom was bestman. Conal Herron, brother and Micheal Brennan, cousin of the groom were groomsmen. Emily Herron was a junior bridesmaid and Lara Herron was a flowergirl. Readings were by Brigid Herron, sister of the groom and Brian Carr, brother-in-law of the bride. Catherine Watters and Cliona Boyle read Prayers of the Faithful. Philomena Boyle and Bernadette Herron, mothers of the bride and groom brought the Gifts to the Altar. A Reflection was read by Peter Gallagher. Music and singing was by Deirdre Doherty. The reception was held in The Mill Park Hotel, DonegalTown and the honeymoon was spent touring.

Journey to the Manger
The Christmas story will never change. The message of hope, joy and love is still offered today, just as it has been over many centuries. The staff and children of Scoil Mhuire would like you to join them on Wednesday 14th December in St Connell’s Church, Glenties at 6.00 p.m. (Please note change of time) for an evening in which they re-enact the Journey to the Manger as they rediscover the meaning of Christmas and all it means. This will be followed by refreshments and a draw in Scoil Mhuire School Gym. Looking forward to seeing you all on what promises to be a wonderful night!

The John Giles Foundation 7 a Side Soccer Competition
The Boys and Girls of Scoil Mhuire won the Regional Finals of John Giles 7 a Side Soccer Competition. Unfortunately the boys lost in the County semi-finals, but the Girls went on to win their CountyFinal in Ballybofey on Thursday 1st December. Well done to the boys and girls who brought three lovely Trophies back to their school. This is the first time this competition was ever held.

Bingo
The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 29thNovember were – Sarah Long, Fintown won the jackpot of € 400. Christine Mc Cool, Anne Whyte, Ardara, Anne Davison, Burtonport, Annie Deane, Kilcar, Denise Campbell, Rosaleen Melly, Cathy Connell and Breege Coyle won € 100 each. Denise Campbell, Anne Quinn, Mary Kennedy, Main Street, Rosaleen Gallagher Ardara, Emer O’ Donnell, Martin Mc Taggart, Yvonne Doherty, Michael Byrne, Naticha Dorerthy, Naticha Dorerthy, Naticha Dorerthy, Mc Devitt, Paddy Gallagher and Michael Dorerthy won € 50 each. Hugh Gallagher and Isabel Boyle won € 25 each.

Loreto Sister
Loreto Sister Mary Elizabeth Kirke, who is a niece of the late Eileen Kennedy, Kilraine, has been living in Peru, in the Andes of Amazonas Province, for almost six years. Sr. Elizabeth would like to make an appeal in some Churches such as in Glenties where she has roots or connections. She is involved with the people of many villages in this Northern part of Peru, who are anxious to plant trees and improve the level of agriculture in their areas, but who have no resources to help them to do this. Sr. Elizabeth will speak at all the Masses in Glenties next weekend and we will have a Special Bucket Collection for her Peru Appeal.

Preparation for Christmas
“You are invited to set aside an hour a week during the next few weeks of Advent to refresh yourself body and soul as you join in some quiet and reflective time here at The Convent in Gortnamucklagh on Thursday 8th, Wednesday 14th and Wednesday 21st at 8 p.m.”

Santa coming to Kilraine
GAP Tourism has invited Santa to the Gap Walking Trail (Bord na Mona site) on Saturday 10th December from 4.30 p.m. – 6. 00 p.m. Tickets are on sale in your local Post Office. Cost is € 10 for one child and € 25 for three of more. Any queries please contact Rosemary on 087 9692076.

Christmas Variety Concert
A Variety Concert, featuring a range of local talent will take place in the Community Centre, Glenties on Friday 9th December at 8 p.m. Admission is € 5. Proceeds are in aid of Glenties Community Action Group. Come along and enjoy a good night’s entertainment. More information here

Sympathy
Sincere sympathy is extended to his son, brothers, sister, other relatives and friends of Gerry Mc Dermott, Cellbridge, Co. Kildare. Gerry was a son of the late Con and Fanny Mc Dermott, Edeninfagh, Glenties. He was predeceased by his wife some years ago.

Sincere sympathy is extended to her family, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends of Annie Maguire formerly of Glen Road, Glenties who died recently in England. Her husband Packie predeceased her some years ago. Annie was 99 years old and was an aunt of the late Gerry Mc Dermott.

Scoil Mhuire Annual Carol Service
Scoil Mhuire annual Carol Service will be held on Wednesday 14th December at 6.30 p.m. in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties. There will be refreshments in the Community Gym afterwards and also a Special Guest. Everyone is welcome to join us.

Big Bingo
There will be a Big Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 6th December 2011. Games 1 to 5 – Lines € 100, Full Panel – € 300, Game 6 – Line – € 100 and Full Panel – € 2000 Jackpot. Games 7 to 11 – Line € 100 and Full Panel € 300. Price including Jackpot sheet is – Single Book € 25, Double Book – € 40. Extra Jackpot sheet costs € 5. Doors will open at 7.30 p.m.

Meeting for Parents of First Holy Communion Children
A meeting for Parents of First Holy Communion Children of Scoil Mhuire, St. Riaghan’s and KilkennyN.S. will take place in Scoil Mhuire on Wednesday 7th December at 8.00 p.m.

Parish Social
The Glenties Parish Social for all the Senior Citizens of the area will take place next Sunday 4th December at 3 p.m. in the Highlands Hotel. The support of the public would be very much appreciated from 5.30 p.m. onwards.

Church Gate Collection
The Church Gate Collection taken up recently for The Community Gym at Scoil Mhuire amounted to € 738.00. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the collection.

Edeninfagh N.S. Fundraising Dance raised € 3,705.00. Thank you to everyone who supported this cause so generously.

Mass in Rossnowlagh
A bus will leave Mc Guinness’ Café at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday 6th December and every first Tuesday for Mass in Rossnowlagh. The organisers wish to make an appeal for people to join them.

Wedding Bells
