Glenties Notes 12th May 2011

A Big Thank You
Fionnuala and Irene Boyle, Glen Road, Glenties, have returned home from their week (2nd- 9th April) participating in ‘Haiti’s ‘Build It Week 2011’. They were supposed to go in October 2010 but because of the Malaria outbreak that trip was postponed. After seeing the destruction caused by the horrific earthquake of January 12th 2010, the two girls decided to volunteer with The Haven Partnership Group. This Haven Group, founded by Leslie Buckley, Cork, travel twice yearly to build houses for the poorest families of Haiti. The girls, with your help, raised €12,000 and joined the group of 370 volunteers, from all over Ireland. The group completed the building and painting of 80 houses, a community centre, a water shop, a playground and a football pitch for the people of Gonaives, in Haiti.
Irene and Fionnuala would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to those who supported their quiz nights, bag-packing days, comedy night, sponsorship cards, the climbers of Croagh Patrick and Mt. Errigal and those who gave donations. Your money has been well spent, as some of the poorest families in Haiti will receive a home with clean running water, a real luxury in Haiti! Playschool / Afterschool
Glenties Community Playgroup Ltd. is holding a Registration evening for September 2011 intake. If you would like to register your child for Pre-School or Afterschool service please come along on Tuesday 17th May 2011 at 8 p.m. Children born between 2nd February 2007 and 30th June 2008 (inclusive) are entitled to the free pre-school year. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and PPS numbers. Children from age 2 years and 10 months can attend pre-school and may qualify for subvention, as may children attending the Afterschool. Thank You
A Big Thank You from the Management and Staff of Glenties Community Playgroup to everyone who bought lines and supported our recent Easter Egg Draw. A total of € 450 was raised, which will go towards the ongoing running costs of the Playgroup. Thanks are also extended to The Highlands Hotel, Post Office and the Paper Stop for assisting in running this draw and a special thanks to those who donated eggs. Your support is very much appreciated.

The Late Owen Ward
The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital, on Saturday 23rd April 2011 as a result of a tractor accident near his home of Owen Ward, Mully, Glenties. His remains were brought home on Monday 25th and to The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Wednesday morning. Fr. Padraig Ó Bhaoill nephew of Owen’s, assisted by Fr. Denis Quinn, Fr. Padraig Mc Dermott and Fr. Dermot Mc Shane concelebrated Requiem Mass. Members of the family did the Readings, Prayers of the Faithful and brought the Gifts to the Altar. Music and singing was by Breidín and James Gallagher. Burial took place in Edeninfagh Graveyard. Owen is survived by his wife, Maggie, sons, John and Seamus, daughter, Maureen, brother, Paddy, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Originally from Glassagh, Owen was the youngest of a family of eight. Three brothers, Mickey, Jimmy and Hughie and three sisters, Mary, Nellie and Madge predeceased him.

Sympathy
Sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Sonny Hanlon, Dr. Mc Closkey Crescent, Glenties and formerly of Tullyard, who died at his home on Monday 2nd May.

First Holy Communion
Congratulations to the boys and girls who received their First Holy Communion in Glenties on Saturday 7th May and to the boys and girls who received their First Holy Communion in Edeninfagh on Sunday 8th May.

Thanks
The families in Kilraine, whose homes were threatened by the forest fire on Sunday evening the 1st of May, would like to extend a sincere thank you to the many people, who arrived from near and far so quickly, putting their own lives at risk, to keep the fire under control. Thank you also to the farmers with their slurry tanks of water and the fire services who were already stretched to their limit. There is no doubt our homes were saved by the actions of all involved and for that we will be eternally grateful.

Irish Kidney Association Collection
The recent Church Gate Collection in aid of the Irish Kidney Association amounted to € 777.00. Thank you to everyone who made a donation, for your very generous contribution.

Fintown Festival / Leisure Cycle
Tír Chonaill GAP CC in association with Fintown Festival is holding a Leisure Cycle (Distance 30K and 60K) on Saturday 4th June starting at 1 p.m. Registration is at 12 noon. Entry fee is € 22 / Cycling Club members € 20. Refreshments will be provided and shower facilities will be available. Cake / Book / DVD Sale
Scoil Mhuire is holding a Cake / Book / DVD sale in the Community Centre next Saturday 14th May after 7.30 Mass, in aid of school funds. Donations of home baked bread / cakes/ buns would be greatly appreciated; also good quality books and DVDs would be very welcome. Your support would be much appreciated.

Monster Bingo
The winners at the Big Bingo on Tuesday 26th April were – Fiona Mc Shane, Kilcar won the Jackpot of € 2,000. Bernie Fitzpatrick, Roisín Bonner, Kathleen Mc Cafferty, Bernie Mc Devitt, Geraldine Mc Guire, Christine Ward, Jeannie Sweeney, Dungloe, Emer O’ Donnell, and Michelle Gillespie won € 300 each. Francis Gallagher, Gortahork and Geraldine Doherty won € 150 each. Patricia White, Michael Byrne, Áine Deane, Anne Quinn, Mary Doherty, Cathy Connell, John O’Donnell, Timlin O’ Dochartaigh, Marian Davidson and Vincent Rodgers won € 100 each. Sympathy
Sincere sympathy is extended to the family, relatives and friends of Frank Moore, Meenahalla, Glenties and formerly of Loughfad, who died suddenly at his home on Friday 29th April 2011.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Michael Mc Gavigan and family, Gortnasillagh, Glenties on the death of Michael’s mother, Josephine Mc Gavigan, Ballindrait, which took place recently.

First Holy Communion
Children from Kilkenny N.S. and Scoil Mhuire will receive their First Holy Communion next Saturday 7th May in St. Connell’s Church, Glenties at 11 a.m. Mass. A Party for the First Holy Communion Children and their families will be held in the Community Centre after the Mass. All Donations will be greatly accepted. Children from Edeninfagh N.S. will receive their First Holy Communion in The Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Sunday 8th May at 9.30 a.m. Mass.

Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver
A Lay Helper of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver will be in the parish next weekend 7th and 8th May, to appeal on behalf of the Missions. The Lay Helper – Mary, will speak about the work of the Sisters, during the Mass, and will take up a collection. The Sisters ask for your support.

Collection
The Annual Multiple Sclerosis Collection taken up recently amounted to € 830. Thank you for your very generous contributions.

90th Birthday

A Dance will take place in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Sunday 1st May. Dance starts at 10 00 p.m. and music is by Rambling Fever.

Holy Week
Times of Services in Holy Week: St. Connell’s Church Glenties – Holy Thursday – 7.30 p.m. Good Friday – 3.00 p.m. and ‘An Hour around the Cross’ at 9.00 p.m. Holy Saturday Easter Vigil – 9.00 p.m. Candles will be provided for use during the Service of Light.

Church of the Holy Family Edeninfagh: Holy Thursday – 7.30 p.m. Good Friday – 3.00 p.m. Holy Saturday – 9.00 p.m.

Family Mass: The 11a.m. Mass on Easter Sunday in St. Connell’s Church. Glenties will be celebrated as the Family Mass; the Children of the Parish will prepare the Liturgy.

“This is Me” Ceremony: The First Holy Communion Children of Kilkenny N.S. and Scoil Mhuire will take part in the “This is Me” Ceremony next Sunday 24th April at 11 a.m. Mass.

“Enrolment Sunday”: The First Holy Communion Children of Edeninfagh N.S. will take part in the “Enrolment Sunday” Ceremony at 9.30 Mass on Sunday 1st May.

Eucharistic Bell
The 50th International Congress will take place from the 10th June to the 17th June 2012 in Dublin. As part of the preparations for this historic event every Parish / Diocese is asked to prepare for this huge International Church Event. A Eucharistic Bell, representing ‘the call to prayer’, will travel around each Parish and Diocese in Ireland. On Thursday morning 5th May it comes to Glenties from Dungloe Parish. The Congress Bell will arrive in Ard Patrick, where a procession will carry it along the Main Street and into the Church. Benediction followed by a Votive Mass of the Holy Eucharistic, will take place. Volunteers from the parish are needed – already the young people from the local schools and groups will participate – but we need more help. If you would like to help in any way, please contact Fr. Glenties Notes 2nd December 2010

Sympathy
Sincere sympathy is extended to Monica Kennedy, Narin Road, Glenties on the death recently in the U.S.A. of her brother, James Gallagher (formerly of Ardun, Glenties).  Sincere sympathy also to his nieces, nephews and all his relatives and friends.

Andy Doherty
The death took place at his home on Wednesday 24th November of Andy Doherty, The Rock and formerly The Wood, Glenties.  His Remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday morning.  Fr. Pat Prendergast celebrated Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. Readings were by his grandson, John Glynn.  Music and singing was by John F. O’ Donnell and Sinead Finn.  Burial took place in the local Graveyard.  He is survived by one daughter, Rosemary Glynn, five sons, Paddy, Danny, John, Andy and Tony, grandchildren, in-laws, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.  Andy’s wife Margaret predeceased him fourteen years ago.  His sister Lil Gallagher, Meenahalla, Glenties and three other sisters and a brother also predeceased him.

New Arrival
Congratulations to June (nee Conefry) and Hugo Kilroy, Altar, Glenties on the birth recently of their fourth child, a baby sister (Clodagh) for Aidan, Emily and Bethany.
