Landscape Character Assessment – Donegal County Council:
Councillor Terence Slowey would like to inform all landowners and any interested parties that the Central Planning Unit of Donegal County Council is carrying out its first Landscape Charter Assessment. This involves identifying and mapping unique areas within the County, almost like a jigsaw. To do this the Council will be looking at the landscape, seascape, historic landscape and townscapes. Everyone knows the landscape in their own area and at this initial stage the Assessment is to know what the general public consider their landscape to be.

Definition of Landscape
The European Landscape Convention defines landscape as ‘an area, as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action and interaction of natural and/or human factors’. A landscape consists of all the visible features of an area of land, both natural and artificial such as trees, mountains, rivers, buildings and roads. Landscape is more than just a beautiful view or an area of outstanding natural beauty, it is all landscapes including spoiled areas and ordinary landscapes, a rural area or an urban area.

What do you think about your landscape? What do you think about your landscape? How do you define the boundaries of your area? What elements or features of interest make your area distinctive? What do local people call your area? (e.g. townlands, parish other). How do you think the landscape should be developed? What is your favourite landscape? What is your least favourite landscape? What landscape do you associate with Donegal? How do you define the boundaries of your area?

Cllr Slowey outlines the way that all land owners or interested parties can get involved.
Upload a description/photo about your landscape to the Council online http://arc.donegal.ie/flexviewers/thedonegallandscape
