Glenties Notes 26th January 2017

The recent sudden death took place at her home of Kathleen Molloy, Lacklea, Glenties. Sincere sympathy is extended to her husband Peadar, son Pauric, daughter Mary and grandson James Michael. Also to her sisters Margaret Shovlin Portnii and Teresa Meehan, Letterkenny and her two brothers Pat Meehan, Letterkenny and Billy Meehan, Sligo and extended family. Her brother Tommy Meehan pre-deceased her in 2014.

Learning For Living Programme

Bluestack Special Needs Foundation
The Bluestack Special Needs Foundation will hold their Church Gate Collection next weekend – Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th January.  All donations greatly appreciated.

Road Closure
A reminder to all users of the R250 Glenties to Fintown road that a closure starting at the Comprehensive School towards Fintown for a distance of 3km will be in place beginning on Monday 30th January until Friday 24th February between the hours of 8am to 5:30 daily.  Road will open each evening and at weekends.  Alternative route: Travelling the N56 from the Grotto to Maas to Gweebarra bridge to Doochary junction.  Turn right onto R252 travel to Doochary and then travel to Fintown. Buses, Emergency vehicles and Local Access will be accommodated at all times.

Butt Drama Circle
The Butt Drama Circle are delighted to bring their 2017 Drama Production of Brian Friel’s ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ to the Community Centre on Friday 17th February at 8pm.  Tickets available at the door.

The Late Hugh Boyle:
The death took place recently in Killybegs Hospital of Hugh Boyle, Caosan, Kilraine, Glenties. Hugh is survived by one brother, Michael and one sister, Philomena Coughlan, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His brother Patrick and two sisters, Bridget Boyle and Sarah O’ Neill predeceased him.

The Late Frank Connaghan:
The death took place in Letterkenny Hospital on Sunday 7th September 2014 of Frank Connaghan, Main Street (formerly Mill Road), Glenties. Frank is survived by his wife, Anne, son Manus, daughters, Tara and Francine sisters, Anne and Madge, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. His daughter, Nadine predeceased him in 1988.

Golden Wedding:
Congratulations to Jimmy and Bernadette Mc Kelvey, Beaghmore, Fintown, who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary last weekend.

Silver Wedding:
Congratulations to Laurence and Michelle Molloy, Narin Road, Glenties, who celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary recently. Best wishes to both couples for many more happy years together.

Occupational First Aid Refresher Course:
St Riaghan’s NS, Drimnacrosh are running an Occupational First Aid refresher course in the school on Wednesday 8th & Wednesday 15th October- (7 p.m. to 10 p.m. each evening). A limited number of places are still available. New Arrivals:
Congratulations to Sharon and Niall Gallagher, Upper Derries on the birth recently of their third child, a baby brother (Conor) for Caitlin and Danielle.

Mary B. Sabine, Meenahalla Glenties died in Killybegs Hospital on Thursday 13th December 2012. Her Remains were brought to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday and burial took place in the New Graveyard after Requiem Mass on Saturday. Her husband Roy predeceased her in April 2012. Mary B. was formerly Gildea from The Rock, Glenties and a sister of Rose Molloy, Ardconnell, Glenties.

Liam Corbett, Meenahalla, Glenties died in Letterkenny Hospital on Saturday 15th December 2012. His Remains were brought to his home on Sunday and to Quigley’s Point on Tuesday for Requiem Mass and Burial. Liam, a native of Mayo was a Garda here in Glenties for many years and made his home in Meenahalla after his retirement.
Hugh Boyle, formerly of Maas and Main Street, Glenties died in Willowbrook Nursing Home, Newbridge, Co. Kildare on Tuesday 18th December 2012. Burial took place in Co. Kildare. Hugh and his wife Eilish had a business in Glenties, (where the Craft Shop is now), until they retired and moved to Kildare. Hugh was the last surviving member of the family of Patrick and Cassie Boyle, Maas, Glenties.

Maggie Toland, Meenamara, Glenties died in Brindley Manor, Nursing Home, Convoy on Wednesday 26th December 2012. Her Remains were brought home and burial took place in Edeninfagh after Requiem Mass on Friday. She is survived by two sons, Connie and Hugh.

Packie Gildea, Straboy died in Letterkenny Hospital on Tuesday 1st January 2013 after an accident. His Remains were brought home for waking and to St. Connell’s Church, Glenties on Friday for Requiem Mass. Burial took place in the New Graveyard. Packie is a son of Gerry and the late Susan Gildea, Straboy, Glenties. He is survived by his father, Gerry, brothers John, Gerard and Joseph and one sister, Anne.

John (Dinny) Quinn, The Glen Tavern, Glenties died in Killybegs Hospital on Saturday 5th January 2013. His remains were brought home for waking and to the Church of the Holy Family, Edeninfagh on Monday for Requiem Mass, celebrated by his nephew Fr. Fr. Denis Quinn, Falcarragh, assisted by several other priests.

Daisy Sweeney, Ard Mc Gill, Glenties died in Letterkenny Hospital on Saturday 5th January 2013. Her Remains were brought home on Monday and burial took place in the New Graveyard on Tuesday after Requiem Mass. Daisy is survived by daughters, Jackie and Sharon, sons, Tom, Edwin, Bernard and David, grandchildren. Her husband Vincent predeceased her in 1998 and her son Martin in 2006.

Sincere sympathy is extended to Bernadette Herron, Gortnasillagh, Glenties on the death in London on January 1st 2013 of her brother Frank Mc Hugh, formerly of Lough Doon, Portnoo.

Sincere sympathy is extended to John Dooley, Narin Road, Glenties on the death of his sister, which took place recently in England.

Sincere sympathy is extended to the relatives and friends of Eddie Mc Dyre, Derries, Glenties, who died on Monday 7th January 2013.

Public Meeting
There will be a public meeting in the Highlands Hotel, Glenties on Sunday, 22nd January at 8 pm concerning the proposed wind farm at Straboy, Glenties. Councillors, TD’s, Senators, MEP and Ministers have been invited. See you there!

The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 10th January were Bridie Boyle and Christine Mc Cool won € 200 each. Denise Campbell won € 120. Mary Kennedy, Emma Sweeney, Brid Roarty, Majella Boyle, Denise McGuire, Vincent Ward, Mary Duffy and Eileen Gallagher won € 100 each. Paddy Moore, Christine Mc Cool, Mickey Herron, John Mc Cole, Mary Bonner, Big Paddy, Elizabeth Buckley and Mary Gallagher won € 50 each. Parish Mission
A Parish Mission will be given by St. Patrick’s Community from Monday 30th January until Friday 3rd February. Members of the Mission Team will be at Mass on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning at 7.45a.m. and will present talks, testimonies and music. Evening Mission Sessions will take place every evening, Monday until Friday inclusive, at 7.30 p.m. Each evening session will have a different theme with testimonies from the group, prayer, music and a lot more. We really encourage you to come to all five nights and get the most out of the Mission.

The Late Breege Nuelen (Campbell)
The death took place suddenly last week of Breege Nuelan, New York, formerly Campbell of Church Road, Glenties. She is survived by her husband, Dick, son Barry and daughter, Brenda, brother Neil, Dungloe, sisters, Evelyn, Letterkenny and Peg, Dublin, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Her sisters Kathleen and Maura predeceased her.

The winners at the Bingo in the Community Centre, Glenties on Tuesday 6th September were – Donal Brennan won the Jackpot of € 400. Emma Sweeney, Norah Mc Hugh, Dim Melly, Anne O’ Donnell, Sandra Moore and Bernie Mc Devitt won € 100. Maureen Gildea, Fiona Boyle, Sally Mc Guigan, Patsy Martin, Majella Boyle, Helen Mc Dyre, Shaun Maloney, Breege Roarty, Mary Doherty, Mary Doherty, Teresa Mc Kelvey, Kathleen Boyle, Marie Boyle, Lisa Coughlan, Gracie O’ Hara and Gallagher won € 50 each. Congratulations to Breidin Boyle, who graduated last week from N.U.I. Maynooth, with an Honours Degree in Maths and Music. Breidin is a daughter of Hugh and Mary Ita Boyle, Glen Road, Glenties.

Fire Fighting Training Day
The Donegal Civil Defence is holding a One Day Auxiliary Fire Fighting Training Day in Glenties Fire Station next Sunday 18th September from 10 a. m. until 2 p.m. On the day, trained fire fighters will be present to demonstrate the skills required to deal with gorse fires, flooding and general fire fighting. If sufficient interest is shown in the Glenties area, Civil Defence will deliver the full fire fighting course over the winter months free of charge. Training is open to anyone aged 18 years or over.

St. Columba’s Comprehensive School Gym
St. Columba’s Comprehensive School Gym will re-open to the public from Monday19th September. It is available for Ladies Indoor Soccer, Basketball, Gaelic, Uni-hoc and Badminton. West Coast Cormorants Swimming Club
This year we hope to start swimming lessons in Ballyshannon Leisure Centre once again. We aim to offer affordable swimming lessons to the children of the area. We intend to run the classes in conjunction with the Dolmen Centre in Portnoo. Depending on the response, lessons should begin shortly. To get an idea of numbers, please register any interested child aged 7 or over with the Dolmen Centre on 9545879, giving your name, address and phone number.
